In 2007, a series of games developed by Harmonix Music Systems and MTV Games enabled fans of music, singers and rock bands to experience their own rockstar days by simulating their idol's performances. From the title of the game itself, Rock Band promises players the (nearly) real deal of being a rockstar. What more can a fan ask for?
Role-playing games such as Rock Band enable users to momentarily live in fantasy worlds as their favorite characters or in this case, musicians in rock bands. What's different for this game is it doesn't limit users to their own gadgets. The developers were creative (and business-minded!) enough to create and sell musical instrument consoles which make players feel a lot like a real rock band ? though this has also become a negative aspect for the game: additional and specific consoles mean higher expenses for the players, too.
Rock Band is a multi-player game, with each member getting a chance to play a musical instrument of his choice using game consoles designed to look and feel like a guitar, drum kit, microphone and keyboard. That means you can either be the lead guitar, bass guitar, keyboard, drums or singer of your own band, waiting to be discovered and live a rockstar life. Rock Band was developed by the same company that brought us Guitar Hero and in both games, players needed to match their timing with scrolling musical notes for each of the instruments. Additionally, a Rock Band vocalist had to match the singer's pitch. Due to its popularity, the game has reportedly reached a 1 billion dollar mark from total sales for various platforms such as Xbox, Play Station, Wii, iOs, Nintendo and mobile.
I find Rock Band particularly interesting as it encourages team play, socializing and music appreciation in a single game. In this modern age, most of our digitally aided games have made us anti-social. For example, we face our gadgets while tapping the screen, desperately trying to run away from monkeys, avoid obstacles, crush candies or the like. Instead of socializing with people, we end up bonding with our gadgets. For Rock Band, however, social interaction between players and team play is still encouraged despite it being aided by electronics and consoles. It is one of those modern games which has stuck to the values of interaction and socialization.
